Trekking in Nepal‘s eastern region takes up about 15% of the country’s entire land area. The eastern area of Nepal has one of the best geographical structures in the world, attracting thousands of visitors each year. It’s a secluded location with challenging access and few of the amenities found in more popular trekking areas. Prepare to be awestruck by some of the world’s highest peaks as you travel through historic towns and learn about the Sherpas, Rais, Walungs, and Limbus cultures firsthand. This region has an abundance of places to visit, including hiking, climbing, and village excursions. The settlements along the trails are home to a diverse range of ethnic groups.

The Best Hiking Trails in Eastern Region:

  • Explore the Kanchenjunga Region’s cultural diversity.

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek, also known as Kanchenjunga PangPema Trek, is one of Nepal’s less popular trekking packages, with an elevation of 8598 meters and four summits rising from its narrow glacial ridges. The literal translation is “five wonderful snow gems.” The avalanches that this incredibly fierce and unpredictable mountain top dumps down are claimed to be the largest. The Kanchenjunga base camp trip from Nepal, commonly known as the “queen of mountains,” is a fantastic trekking location in and of itself. From warm areas to glacier wilderness, the region has a diverse ecological zone. The trip’s primary attraction, though, is the massive Kanchenjunga glacier.

Makalu Arun Valley Trek:

The Salpa Pass (3350m) and the SurkieLa Pass (3085m) are two passes in the valley, both relatively high in the Arun valley. To enjoy the grandeur of this place, Arun valley trekking in Nepal requires strong health and stamina. Tungba, a Sherpa alcoholic drink, is famous in this area. Mera Peak, Mt. Milke Danda trekking is a 25-kilometer-long ridge that runs between 2580 and 3580 meters, and is considered the eastern twin of Nepal’s Khaptad Plateau. The ridge’s natural diversity ranges from the Tamur and Arun river valley’s Sal Forests to alpine plants at its highest point. The Milke Danda hike is known for having the most diverse Rhododendron species in Nepal (29 out of 32 species reported from Nepal). The Arun and Tamur Valleys are separated by a long, high forested ridge. We begin our trek from Basantapur (see Kanchenjunga North route) and hike up this ridge for several days, with views of Makalu to the west and Kanchenjunga to the east.

Lumba Sumba Trek:

In 2012, the Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN) officially recognized and explored the Lumba Sumba Trek. The Lumba sumba Trek’s main draw is the Lumba sumba summit, which offers a spectacular perspective of Himalayan landscapes and is home to many ethnic groups such as the Limbus, Sherpas, Rai, Gurung, Magar, Newar, and Tamang. The journey passes through the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area (KCA) in the eastern Himalayas, where you may learn about and see traditional culture, farming activities, and several bird species, as well as wildlife like as the endangered Snow Leopard and Red Panda. There are various high mountain lakes in Olangchung Gola, and along this journey, we will have the opportunity to visit two of Nepal’s greatest preserved areas: Kanchenjunga Conservation Area and Makalu Barun National Park.

Illam Tea Garden Trek:

Ilam Tea Garden Trek is one of Nepal’s most beautiful trekking destinations, located in the Ilam District, which is known for its tea production. It is remote and unfamiliar from a Western perspective due to its remoteness and distance from Kathmandu. Ilam Tea Garden is situated between Ilam and India, with elevations ranging from 140 to 3,636 meters above sea level. Because of its popularity in tea production, it is one of the most beautiful tourist sites. This small hill town boasts an incredible scenery with sloping tea plantations, mountain streams, lush natural forest, holy sites, and a distinct local culture. It is, nonetheless, a well-known location for botanical and anthropological studies. Another major attraction of this trail is Sree Antu (2,328m) and Maipokhari (2,121m), which are both religious and historical sites. The sacred abode of Goddesses Bhagawati in a magnificent lake surrounded by deep forest of fir, juniper, Birch, Pine, and huge flora and wildlife. Kanyam and Fikkal are well-known for making Ilam famous for its tea production throughout the country.

Walangchun Gola Trek:

Walangchun Gola Trek is a camping trekking destination in one of Nepal’s most remote or isolated areas, located to the north of the Tamor River in the hilly area of Taplejung District, bordering Tibet, China. It’s also known as Olangchung Gola, and it’s where the nearby villages of Yangma, Ghunsa, Khangbachey, Lungthung, and Lelep do their shopping. Walangchun Gola Trek is one of the most challenging trekking trails in Nepal’s eastern region. It gives us with the ideal opportunity to discover the breathtaking views of magnificent mountains such as Kanchenjunga and Makalu, as well as dramatic landscape views of Nepal’s most beautiful settlement. This trekking trail is regarded as the greatest location for Buddhist culture or meditation explorations.

Best Season to Trek in Eastern Nepal:

The best seasons for trekking and mountaineering in Nepal are autumn (September – November) and spring (March – May). During these seasons, the weather is typically clear and the temperature is temperate, providing spectacular views with no obstructions. Beautiful flowers, plants, and unique animals greet you in the spring. Walking is recommended throughout these months.

Summer (June-August) and winter (November-March) (December – February).

Even though summer brings significant monsoon rains, the trails around Mustang, Dolpo, and Nar- Phu valleys are much clearer because they are rain shadow locations. Trekking on Everest, Langtang, Annapurna, and Tibet is always better in the winter.
